The caste system in India has
always been a long-standing issue of society. This issue has been a part
of India for a very long time and even now in the modern age, the caste
system might not be talked about as much, but it is an issue that still
persists. Over the years, Bollywood has also made many films that talk
about the caste system as an attempt to spread awareness about the
problems that arise out of a society divided by caste. Here are five
Bollywood movies on caste system you should watch:
Ankur (1974)
Directed
by Shyam Benegal and the debut of Ananth Nag and Shabana Azmi, Ankur
is based on a true story. The film revolves around a poor Dalit couple
and it addresses many social issues beyond casteism such as alcoholism
and religious differences.
Sadgati (1981)
Directed
by Satyajit Ray, Sadgati was based on a short story written by Munshi
Premchand. It is a harsh criticism of the caste system and it was about a
low caste villager named Dukhi who is exploited by the priest to work
without pay.
Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)
Directed
by Basu Chatterjee, Chameli Ki Shaadi stars Anil Kapoor and Amrita
Singh in lead roles. It was a comedy which took a satirical approach to
highlighting the evils of the caste system. The film has gone on to
become one of the director’s most popular works.
Bandit Queen (1994)
Bandit
Queen is a biopic about Phoolan Devi directed by Shekhar Kapur and
starred Seema Biswas in the lead role. The film shows the life of the
famous dacoit and the troubles she endured in her life including
exploitation by higher caste men that would lead her to choosing the
infamous life.
Aarakshan (2011)
This
film deals with the issue of reservation of seats for the lower caste
and was directed by Prakash Jha. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali
Khan, and Deepika Padukone, it shed light on an important political
issue that arises from the caste system that is still relevant today.
Article 15 is another Bollywood movie that addresses the topic of discrimination based on the caste system which will be releasing on 28th June in theaters and has already become a topic of discussion due to its subject.
